Most scholars believe that orthodontic treatment dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. In fact, the oldest known written record of attempts to correct crowded or protruding teeth goes back more than 3,000 years.
Over the years, the advent of new technologies has brought orthodontics to an entirely different level of treatment.
Today, the work of 15,000 orthodontists, who are members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) from the United States, Canada and abroad, are helping to improve more than 5 million patients' smiles to become works of art.
Below are links to articles from "The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics." The articles detail the history of orthodontics as well as the dental specialty of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
